Daily Vlog 14: Out on a Limb for Love

I feel so silly! I had this written and ready to go, except that I forgot to schedule this to post on Valentine’s Day, the way it was supposed to. Well, now you’ll just have to wait a year to implement my Valentine’s Day advice. (Kidding, you can probably implement it today.) Anyway, I’m sorry this is late. Blaming my ridiculous lack of sleep these past couple of weeks. :)

There is no one better for this job, and I’m not just saying that because I’m biased. Y’all know how hard of a time I have tooting my own horn, but sometimes you just know. And this is one of those times. Thank you, in advance, for your thoughts, prayers, and support. :)

Daily Vlog 13: Here Comes the M Train

Good news! We’ve officially broken into the top 10 in the ShareSLO Social Ambassador contest! This is a big deal because only the top 10 folks are interviewed.

Typically I like to give you guys a bit more background on the video blog for the day, but I’m going to level with you right now: it’s 12:30 AM. I’m exhausted. I still have another video blog to edit, and I’m falling asleep while typing this. So please excuse that I’m not my usual self. Usual self will return once she’s rested. :) Thanks for understanding! Until then, please enjoy the latest video blog.

Daily Vlog 12: Dollars For SLO Food Bank!

Before I say anything else, I need to explain why I’m in my car in this video, just so you don’t think I’m really weird (I mean, c’mon, we can all agree that I’m somewhat weird). There are two places in my universe where it is quiet enough to film a video blog: my bedroom, and my car. But on Friday, Ellie was napping, and Mike was reading in bed, so, out to the car I went. And now I’m pretty sure my neighbors think I’m insane, on account that saw me talking to myself for 4 straight minutes in the car. Hazards of the job, I suppose.

You’ll be happy to know that I’m still giving money to the Food Bank, even though we didn’t meet our goal. It’s not even a choice. And to be honest, I was probably going to do it soon anyway. Someday I’ll tell you guys the story of how, for a while growing up, all we had was powdered milk, and food that came in brown boxes that looked like military MREs. Needless to say, I’ll be grateful for the food bank for the rest of my life.

Also, if you didn’t understand that “Honey Badger” reference from yesterday, here’s a link to a viral video that will explain everything. (Fair warning, it contains swears.)

Daily Vlog 11: Fierce Like a Honey Badger

On Friday, I super dropped the ball, and accidentally deleted most of my daily vlog. But don’t you worry. I make up for it by sharing the best method for preparing bacon you have ever laid your beautiful eyes on. Enter: The Bacon Method. Go out and buy some primo bacon, try out the method, then come back and tell me how it changed your life forever. (That’s what I’m in the blogging business for, btw. To change your life FOREVER. ;) )

Daily Vlog 10: Food Bank Update, Vine, and the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum

The Food Bank Challenge ends at 9:00 PM today! At the time of writing this, we only need 655 more votes! So if you haven’t voted yet, will you please consider doing so? Even if it’s just this one time? I would LOVE to see the challenge met! $200 becomes 1,400 nutritious meals. :)

Also, in this video, I talk a little bit about a new app I’ve been playing with called Vine. If you’re an iPhone user, you should download it and give it a shot. It’s free, and it’s really fun. And add me! My Vine name is “melissajenna.” If you watch the video, you’ll see a bunch of tiny clips I shot with Vine today, with Ellie at the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum. We had SUCH a fun time! I can’t wait to go back!

Daily Vlog 9: The War of Art

Too often I see people waiting for everything to be “just right” before they begin to invest time and energy into the things they love doing. Well, if it’s true “your first 10,000 photographs are your worst,” then why the heck not start now? The overwhelming majority of us were not born with inherent skills or talent, and will have to work our entire lives to gain mastery of a thing. Why not start now? You know what’s happening while you’re waiting around for the stars to align (or for your website to be set up the way you want it)? Other people are creating, and getting better at their craft. No, their websites aren’t perfect, and no, they may not “have the time” to produce excellent-quality work, but they’re getting their 10,000 out of the way a heck of a lot faster than you are. (I guess I’m feeling tough-lovey today.)

One of my greatest fears in life is that I’ll die before I give myself the opportunity to create. And this blog, and this video blog, is a part of what I do to battle against that fear on a daily basis. What’s your thing? Go do it! Do it now!

Also, if you’re interested in reading Steven Pressfield’s “The War of Art,” you can find it on Amazon for about $10.

Daily Vlog 7: Food Bank Challenge

Half the people that are in the top 10 of the ShareSLO Social Ambassador contest are using a “vote-farming” website to get ahead, and typically this type of cheating wouldn’t bother me (because I believe I can succeed on merit alone), but in this contest, only the top 10 vote-getters get an interview for the job. Meaning that I’m being edged out of earning an interview because others are choosing to compete dishonestly. It’s all very disappointing.

But rather than vent and complain (too much) about it, I decided to turn this negative into a positive, by running a little “voting-scheme_ of my own. The video explains it all. :)

Daily Vlog 6: Climb Every Mountain

So Saturday I tried running up a mountain, which is TOTALLY out of character for me. But since I’ve been going to CrossFit for about a month now, I have this…dare I say it…addiction to being physically active. And if I’m not, I get all crazy-like. Suddenly, I’m like a puppy, eager and energetic to just run somewhere. So I ran up a mountain. Or rather, I ran half-way up a mountain, and super-fast-walked the rest. I made it up and back in 7 1/2 minutes. It was tough, sure, but nowhere near as tough as I thought it’d be. Next time, I’m gonna do it twice.

Sometime soon I’m going to have to tell you guys all about CrossFit, and my commitment to stop being “skinny-fat.” It’s quite the roller-coaster of a story.

Vacation Life (A Beginning)

Morro Rock in Morro Bay Harbor

Morro Rock, in Morro Bay. You’ll be seeing a lot of this big fella.

It makes sense that after writing an entire post about “balance,” that’d I’d completely abandon my blog, right? Yeesh, have I been away for a while. Sorry ’bout that.

Obviously, I’ve been taking some time away from my computer. This happens when the weather is in the high 70s in October, and you live a couple-a blocks from the ocean. (Humble brag if I ever wrote one.)

But seriously. I guess I just felt like I needed some space. Not from you all, or the blog in general, but, like, real physical space. So, I’ve been spending a lot of time outdoors, and very little time writing. This, as you can imagine, is both good and bad. On the one hand, my summer tan has extended itself into an autumn tan, which is worth at least +25 awesome-points. On the other hand, well, I’ve been completely MIA, and since writing is somewhat cathartic for me, I’m starting to get a little antsy. But I have an idea! And I think you’ll enjoy it.

(Prepare yourself for a flat-out brag.)

I live in the most beautiful place in the world. (Somewhat debatable.) It is also the happiest place in America. (Not at all debatable, unless you want to go toe-to-toe with Oprah Winfrey.) I’m blessed in countless ways, but I hold where I live very close to my heart. I’ve lived lotsa places (my “about me” page talks about some of them), and the Central Coast of California is truly special. It struck me, a couple of weeks ago, that I live where millions of people vacation each year. So why the heck aren’t I living it up more? Then I asked myself this question:

“What would I be doing differently if I were vacationing here, instead of living here?”

I felt as if I was taking this amazing location for granted, and that if I didn’t snap out of it soon, me and my family would be stuck in a rut of just existing here, rather than truly living here. Does that make sense? We’d keep on doing the work-home-sleep, work-home-sleep shuffle until we’re too old to hike 128 some-odd hiking trails in the area. And that simply won’t do.

Enter: Vacation Life!

“Vacation Life” is the tag I’m going to use for all of the posts that have to do with exploring this amazing place my family calls home. Over the past two weeks I’ve amassed a ridiculous number of photos from various excursions, but I’ll only share the best ones here on the blog. (Don’t want to spam you with 17 pictures of the same sunset, ya know.) This way I’m staying active and enjoying my surroundings and I have a steady stream of beautiful photos to share with you guys. (Gotta love a real win-win situation.)

Of course, not all of my “Vacation Life” posts will be breathtaking sunsets and seaside panoramas. Because what else do people do on their vacations? They relax. They treat themselves. They spend quality time with their family. So I’ll share that stuff, too.

So, I’m inviting you all to get to know us Godseys a little better, and join us as we try and make the most of where we live. I hope you enjoy it! And who knows? Maybe some of you will dig a bit deeper into what makes your towns special, too. And if you do, please let me know! I would love to see/read more about y’all and where you’re from!

For starters, here’s a panorama I took of the sunset last week. We were barbecuing, and suddenly: BLAMMO. Pink and orange everywhere. So I ran on up to the crow’s nest and snapped this quick photo with my iPhone. (Say what you will about the Maps app in iOS 6, but the panorama feature is totally worth it.) You can click on the picture to see it full-sized.

Of Past Lives and Present Loves

Zion National Park

An image of Zion National Park, which I took during the road-trip mentioned in this entry.

As I was driving home from Morro Bay this evening, a certain song came on that reminds me very much of the last vacation I took before I was married, and well before I had a child. It began to rain, and as my eyes adjusted to see through the wet windshield, I tried to pretend for a moment that I was that girl again, the one who took weeks-long road-trips by herself, and who could only find peace by watching everyone and everything familiar to her disappear in her rearview mirror.

In my “former” life, I would search out God by thrusting myself into the unfamiliar, anxious for a beauty I had never seen, but in my present life I’ve found limitless beauty in the people that I am blessed to be so permanently bonded to, the home that I am so completely familiar with, and the simple pleasure of finding God in the day-to-day routine of my life. Upon arriving home and pulling into my driveway, I realized just how far I’ve actually travelled since my “explorer” days; no longer must I remove myself from the familiar to feel near to God’s heart, but rather I feel drawn towards home and the people who live there and the wild beauty of what we’re creating. My memory of my explorer days is a romantic one, but truthfully, my present life is so much more thick with God’s presence that the observance of my distance traveled brings peace beyond description.

So cheers to the Adventure of Home, a journey I get to share right alongside my two great loves.
